In the early years of aviation after the golden age of air ship, more precisely after Charles Lindbergh's solo flight across the Atlantic in 1927, airplanes with radial engines ruled the skies. The 30s and 40s decade saw many classic flying machines built primarily for the military. Those days' pilots wore scarves, goggles, boots and leather helmets. Amelia Mary Earhart created history flying solo across the Atlantic Ocean in 1932. Amelia Earhart disappeared into history in the year 1937 attempting to circumnavigate the globe.

People are still fascinated by the life, career and the airplanes of early aviators. The real nostalgia buffs still prefer to have RC models of classic airplanes of yesteryears. An RC model airplane is a miniature of the original airplane that once flew. They are built using the same principles of aerodynamics as the original planes.

Classic RC model airplanes look exactly like their originals. They are colored just like the original and have the same logos and symbols as the original ones. These planes are either electric or gas powered. Electrically powered classic RC airplanes use high performance batteries which need frequent recharging.

The fuel powered or gas powered classic RC airplanes have a glow plug engine and the fuel used is gasoline, methanol, or nitromethane. They are also referred as nitro RC model airplanes.

RC model airplane enthusiasts who prefer the classic models can purchase kits that are widely available and build their own classic model. The kits are available as ARTF (almost ready to fly) or RTF (ready to fly). But the real hobbyists prefer to assemble their own classic RC airplanes. A little knowledge of aeronautics and airplanes will help but if you don't have it, you can buy scale RC airplane plans or RC airplane kits and assemble it.

In the early 1930s, model flying was very different from what it is today. In those days the planes were self propelled by rubber bands but as technology progressed it was possible to make small internal combustion engines for model airplanes. Today vintage RC airplanes have the same classic appearance but they sport the modern glow plug engine and an advanced radio gear.

Traditional classic model RC airplanes were powered by diesel engines, there are still some manufacturers making them. You may buy a kit or build a classic RC airplane from scratch using plans. The classic RC airplanes are large scale models of original planes and balsa wood is used in their construction.

These planes are large and hence fly slowly and gently. These planes will typically have a 4stroke glow plug engine and a 3 channel radio. Ben Buckle, a British company is a much respected manufacturer of classic RC airplanes. You may choose from a number of designs which are available such as 'Majestic Major', 'Buccaneer' or the 'Flying Quaker'.

If you prefer the electric powered airplanes then the 'Aerobatic Classic Bi-Plane Electric RC Plane' is recommended. It's a ready to fly model and you can get started once you remove the model from the box. The Bi-Plane design is very stable, the plane performs awesome loops, rolls, upside down flights and many other stunts. It can take off from any smooth surface. The package includes charger, rechargeable batteries, and radio transmitter. This classic RC model airplane appeals to both the novice and veteran.

Contrary to popular belief, people who work in model shops don't spend all day every day playing with their own models!!!

However on Friday afternoon Dale and myself decided we were going flying with our own models. We closed the shop dead on 6 o'clock (usually we don't leave till gone 7). We were cashed up, loaded up and off to our own secret flying site in Kent by 6.30.

We arrived at the flying field around 6.45, all models still intact after a mad dash along the A2 and some rather bendy country lanes.

First out of the cars were a pair of Weston Cougars, one of my favourite planks (sorry for the term plank but I class myself as a heli flyer). Once started and both airborne there was a really noticeable difference in performance between the two. Dale's is fitted with a OS46LA, whilst mine has a West Eurotech 36 fitted. We both decided to go for height, (when I say height I mean the clouds were getting in the way) Dale's climb rate was respectable but mine climbed like a homesick angel. After a few attempts at getting it to flatspin & some low inverted circuits I was out of fuel, so was forced to land and get the next model out.

The next candidate was a Century Predator Gasser which has had one previous flight. The beauty of petrol powered models is that they are cheap to run & there is no starting equipment required. The previous flight was used to set the model and engine up correctly. After a few tweaks to the engine I was happy with the way she was running I thought we would do a few gentle circuits with a couple of stall turns thrown in for good measure. I must say this is probably the most stable model in the hover I have ever flown. I landed, then passed the controls to Dale for a quick play. He also loved how stable it flew.

The amount of fun you can have with an electric Zagi is amazing. This model is so much fun and so unbreakable, I found myself doing the silliest of things with it. Like skimming across the strip with the prop clipping the grass on its way through, stalling it from up high and seeing who could get the highest bounce when it hit the deck!
Who cares, the chances of breaking it are near nil.

That's how is continued for the rest of the evening.... until we remembered that to fly in the dark - which i used to do on a regular basis - you need 'glow sticks'. ()

So, back to the shop to unload all the models - we both commented on what a great evening's flying it was, probably one of the best this year - we are not trying to tempt fate or anything, but are now charging everything in sight ready for another evening of fun.

One of the best things you can invest in is a fast charger - perfect for those last minute decisions to go flying, we have all put a lot of miles on my poor old ripmax fast charger.

If you plan to enter the world of flight, then you choose a flight cheaper and slower with an easy to use remote control. If you plan to assemble the plane, then read the instructions properly before assembling the parts together. This allows you to learn without crashing your plane often, and is convenient for the replacement of the aircraft in case of serious accident. Choose an open field with lots of grass, so that the aircraft isolated fromCrash. If you are a club flight model, then pay attention to their rules and regulations and for insurance claims if your plane to hit any body or their property.

If you accept an expert who can show you the ropes before trying new tricks. Start with the basics before difficult stunts like loops, rolls and inverted flight. If you fly a plane powered by gasoline, then yes the engine noise does not disturb nearby residents. Put upa small sticker on your plane giving their name and phone number so that if your plane is flying from the series and ends up in someone's property, then they can contact you. Don'ts

Do not let small children handle the plane. If you want to touch, see and hear the plane, then remove the batteries and store the remote out of sight. Do not practice your stunts, although there are many people onO land many planes in flight. Do not hang up the remote first frequency, the other with the first. Let your plane fly too far, can only go out of the reach and crash somewhere. Do not fly your airplane power lines or too many trees. Do not try to find a faster aircraft before learning to slow a plane.

Do not try any tricks on their own. Having an expert to help. Do not fly when conditions or storm outThe chance of rain. Do not fly when the aircraft batteries are fully charged. Do not try your hand propeller plane, making a particular aircraft fuel. You might lose a finger in the process. The plane does not land in the vicinity of your pets when they are nervous. Could chew the air. Do not fly your plane on public roads or private property of someone. Do not use the remote in an approximate way. This is an electronic element, so treat them gently.
